European Commission Environment Website

The Nature Restoration Law (NRL) is now officially published and will enter into force on 18 August, 2024. This law establishes rules aimed at supporting the long-term recovery of biodiverse and resilient ecosystems across EU Member States' land and sea areas through the restoration of degraded ecosystems.

It contributes to the Union's objectives of climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation, and land degradation neutrality, while also enhancing food security and fulfilling international commitments.

The NRL provides a framework for Member States to implement effective, area-based restoration measures, targeting the restoration of at least 20% of land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.
