Description of the event: The MED Sustainable Tourism Community open conference with policy-makers, economic actors and international experts to make tourism sustainable, hosted by UNINT University in Rome. Tourism is about hospitality and welcoming travelers who have an extraordinary opportunity to enjoy a unique environmental and cultural heritage and lifestyle. However, tourism should be re-connected with hosting territories to exploit the full potential of this strategic industry for the Mediterranean region, which generates 11% of its GDP, while reducing long-term negative transformations on local economies, societies and ecosystems. To achieve this objective we need policies based on evidence coming from key actors and stakeholders on the ground. The MED Sustainable Tourism Community is organising the international conference “Re-connecting tourism: promoting evidence-based policies for sustainable development” on the 29th-30th May 2018 at the UNINT University in Rome. This will be the occasion for our Community of 18 trans-regional cooperation projects to present preliminary results on tourism in the Mediterranean region and to share challenges with policy makers, economic actors, international experts and the wider scientific community.
