INITIATIVE INITIATIVE: Professional Skippers in the Mediterranean website

Passeig Torreblanca, 7, Barcelona, Spain
website

The overall aim of the MedSkippers project is to create a sustainable professional network of professional skippers and charter sector across the Mediterranean Sea, to improve training and recognition of professional skippers of small commercial vessels and with the ultimate goal of boosting charter and nautical tourism as a vehicle to attract youth towards maritime professions in support of the Eu´s Blue Growth policy.

The project brings together stakeholders' opinion and knowledge in order to identify market gaps and to improve public-private cooperation and training harmonisation, and fostering skippers license recognition among different countries. The project will build capacity across the Mediterranean non-EU countries to foster sectoral growth and encourage youth to choose a maritime profession.

The project will deliver an international training programme and modular standards, mainstreaming ocean literacy to improve environmental sustainability, and promoting complementary skills to reduce employment seasonality for skippers, improve long-term careers and enrich tourist experiences. Also, an IT tool will be designed to connect professional skippers with job opportunities in the charter sector.
