events event: DG MARE workshop at EU Regions Week 2023: an innovative energy transition of the EU blue economy

Date: October 11, 2023

Place:  SQUARE Brussels Meeting Centre, Hall 300, Brussels - Belgium

Description of the event:

DG MARE will participate in this year’s edition of EU Regions Week with a workshop on ‘Coastal Cities and Regions at the forefront of the innovative energy transition of the blue economy’.

Whilst focusing mainly on fisheries and aquaculture, the recent European Commission’s Communication on the Energy Transition (COM/2023/100) paves the way for the energy transition of the whole EU blue economy. Local and regional public authorities of coastal regions and cities, especially those that have included blue economy in their Smart Specialisation Strategies for 2021-2027, are key actors driving this process. They can lead by example, share best practices, and help accelerate an innovation-driven energy transition of the blue economy in coastal regions and cities all across the EU.

After the launch of the Energy Transition Partnership for EU fisheries and aquaculture earlier this year, as well as the setup of the Blue Forum and the Smart Specialisation Platform for Sustainable Blue Economy, EU Regions week 2023 is a good opportunity to provide a space for stakeholders to exchange and share of best practices, as well as to extend the invitation to all coastal regions and cities to use the existing tools to accelerate the energy transition of the EU blue economy. We will do so by entering in dialogue with the representatives of two EU regions and local communities engaged in innovative energy transition practices.

The workshop will take place on Wednesday 11 October 2023, from 14h30 to 15h30, in Hall 300 of the SQUARE Brussels Meeting Centre (Mont des Arts, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium).
