events event: From waves to wisdom Conference: Empowering Fishers through Sustainable Fisheries Training

Date: September 21, 2023

Place:  , Brussels - Belgium

Description of the event:

This event is in honour of the finalisation of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) project ‘Catching the Potential’ on a sustainable fisheries training standard, the revision of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel (STCW-F), and of the successful inclusion of sustainable fisheries training in the revised STCW-F.

The Project focuses on developing a standard for sustainable fisheries training to be implemented in the EU. Hence, a combination of the three pillars of sustainability, training, and ensuring good prospects for fishers, fishing communities and the marine environment.

We are also making use of the revision of the STCW-F to ensure structural implementation of sustainable fisheries training to include such training in the international training requirements at the IMO with support of the FAO and ITF. The project contributed to the establishment of adequate and uniform competence requirements for fishers. The STCW-F revision will likely be concluded in fall this year. With our project, the training we develop within, and the pilot trainings we undertook, we believe it prepares fishermen and women, trainers, and governments for the revised STCW-F.

This event presents a unique opportunity to highlight the value of a common sustainable training system in Europe, as well as the value of investing in the competences of fishers as they play a central role in achieving the sustainability goals set out in the Common Fisheries Policy. It also emphasizes the pivotal role of EU policymakers in advocating for vocational training, career development, and the growth of a modern fishing industry that cares about the well-being of our seas.
