On January 30, 2026, Arnaud Terrisse, Biodiversity Program Manager at Plan Bleu, spoke at spoke at a webinar on the potential development of nature credits for coastal and marine ecosystems in the EU, organized by DG MARE and DG ENV.
This major event, which brought together more than 400 participants, highlighted the importance of new financing mechanisms for the restoration of marine biodiversity.
Arnaud Terrisse shared the progress of the ARTEMIS Interreg Euro-MED project on innovative financing solutions:
- Monitoring and sustainability of pilot sites: Presentation of the restoration monitoring protocols at our four pilot sites and strategies to ensure the monitoring of restored sites well beyond the end of the project in June 2026.
- Development of Nature Credits or PES schemes: Focus on the ARTEMIS approach, which is currently assessing the potential of Payments for Environmental Services (PES) and Nature Credits. These models are based on rigorous field data from pilot sites promoting Blue Carbon and Biodiversity.
- Design of robust credit systems: Explanation of the process for defining reliable credits based on the extent and condition of ecosystems, in order to set consistent prices that meet the demand of the market and “nature-positive” investors.
Through these contributions, Plan Bleu reaffirms its commitment to providing a concrete roadmap for transforming ecological restoration into a sustainable economic lever for the Mediterranean basin.
