News: New online course: Using Science, Knowledge & Tools to operationalise the BBNJ Agreement

The  UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 - 2030) ('Ocean Decade') and the  Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO's OceanTeacher Global Academy have launched a new online course, starting 13 April 2026, to support the global ocean community in using ocean science and knowledge to implement the BBNJ Agreement. Featuring the contributions of over 80 world-leading ocean experts, the course includes three modules that cover:

  • The historical background, core concepts and conventions underlying the BBNJ Agreement
  • The Agreement’s four main pillars: Marine genetic resources; Area-Based Management Tools, including Marine Protected Areas; Environmental Impact Assessments; and Capacity-building and the Transfer of Marine Technology
  • The Agreement’s main implementation mechanisms

The course is designed to support early and mid-career professionals working in national institutions, services, and research centers related to the ocean.
