News: Our Climate – Our Community: a new regional campaign for climate awareness across the Mediterranean

Our Climate Our Community

Our Climate – Our Community is a regional campaign that aims to strengthen climate awareness and understanding across the Mediterranean, with a particular emphasis on the communities of its southern and eastern shores. The campaign has launched a new website to help make sense of what is changing, how it reaches daily lives, and what can be done, individually and together. It is available in English, Arabic and French.

The Mediterranean is warming faster than the rest of the world, and the effects are piling up: hotter weather, a warming and rising sea, growing water scarcity, high rates of erosion and reduced agricultural output. In the region, climate change stopped being an abstract concept decades ago. This summer, relentless heatwaves pushed many communities, and the systems they rely on, to the limit. Rivers ran low, ecosystems struggled to keep their balance, and food prices soared. Yet resilience runs deep in this region, which has the knowledge, the traditions and the tools to adapt and thrive.

Science, education and connecting people

Through science, education, inclusive storytelling, and by connecting people, the campaign transforms ideas into action for a more resilient region. It empowers women, youth, and communities “to protect what we share: our climate and our Mediterranean”.

The campaign works hand in hand with civil society actors, ministries responsible for environment, climate, water, and education, EU Delegations in partner countries, regional partners, intergovernmental organisations, and other projects active across the region.

Understand, connect the dots, take action

The website follows three simple steps:

Understand. Explainers and infographics provide clear, accessible explanations of how climate change is reshaping water, food, nature, and daily life, from how communities adapt to heatwaves to why plastic is a climate problem too.

Connect the dots. A short quiz (five questions, about 30 seconds, no right or wrong answers) shows how climate change may already be unfolding where users live.

Take action. 5-step checklists, from saving water at home to avoiding single-use plastics, and how-to guides, such as turning a balcony or rooftop into a mini food garden, offer simple ways to act, individually and together. A directory helps users find civil society groups, networks and initiatives active in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia.

The website also offers ready-to-use activities and tools for school teachers, youth leaders, non-formal educators and facilitators working with young people across the Mediterranean, as well as a toolkit for journalists and communicators, grounded in the latest climate communication research, to help them reach their audiences more effectively.

Institutional framework

The campaign is funded by the European Union through the “Water and Environment Support – Biodiversity and Climate Action (WES-BCA) in the Neighbourhood South region” project and will run until November 2027. It promotes the implementation of the Pact for the Mediterranean, launched in November 2025, a flagship European Union initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation with its Southern Mediterranean partners.

The campaign also supports the implementation of the Mediterranean Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development (MSESD) and its Action Plan, under the guidance of the Mediterranean Committee on Education for Sustainable Development (MCESD).
