The cross-border area involved in the STREETS project is extremely rural in character and suffers from a state of physical marginalisation given its insular nature and position on the edge of the European Union. Furthermore, limited connections in the transport system and difficulty in integrating the two economic systems with international markets negatively influences the social-economic growth of the two islands. It is within this context that the project has promoted actions creating a transport network map and an integrated survey of supply and demand, thus contributing to a better understanding of multimodal transport systems between Malta and Sicily and in defining a framework for a strategy promoting transport along the main goods and passenger routes between the two islands in view of the integration and sustainability with corridor 5 TEN-T. Furthermore, the capacity building programme, addressed to 15 persons per member country both from the PA and private sector enabled them to successfully adapt their respective functions/services for the joint management of the Italy-Malta permanent coordination centre for transport policy.
