The webinar “MARINE RENEWABLE ENERGIES: Fast-Advancing Technologies And Promising Opportunities”, organized by Union for the Mediterranean and EMUNI took place on Wednesday, 17th of November 2021.
Building on the most recent findings of a comprehensive UfM report and through selected presentations and interventions, the event focused on the sectoral characteristics, challenges and opportunities of the deployment of Marine Renewable Energies (MRE), including:
- Recent developments at the EU and the Union for the Mediterranean levels, contributing to a Sustainable Blue Economy
- Conflicts and synergies with different uses of the maritime space, namely tourism, fisheries and shipping
- Long-term environmental impacts and concerns, such as noise levels, collision risks, habitat alteration or contaminants release
- The potential of the sector in terms of technological developments
- The particular potential of floating offshore wind technology in the Mediterranean Sea given that it can be deployed in deeper waters
- Need to strengthen the Mediterranean regional cooperation in energy, grid and marine spatial planning for cost optimisation
- Further development of sustainable energy and self-sufficiency of coastal areas and islands
- Enhancing the transition towards carbon-neutral ports
