events event: UfM Water Task Forces

Date: September 19, 2022

Place:  TBC, Valencia - Spain

Description of the event:

UfM Water Task Forces, Water Access, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH), and Water Climate Change Actions (WCCA), will be held from 10:45 to 12:00 and from 12:00 to 13:30 hours (CEST), under a hybrid format.

Achieving water security is a major challenge in the Mediterranean region where water scarcity is characteristic for most areas. In the Union for the Mediterranean, we have a long-standing compromise with the objectives of the global agenda, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically SDG 6 on access to water and sanitation to all. The UfM developed the UfM Water Policy Framework for Actions 2030 precisely to guide and support governments, policymakers, and water stakeholders to walk towards the achievement of the objectives set in the global agenda.

While governments around the Mediterranean are focused on how to bring about decisive actions to meet their environmental challenges and tackle climate change, in the Union for the Mediterranean we will reconvene next 19 September 2022 in Valencia (Spain) our UfM Water Task Forces dedicated to Water Access, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)and Water Climate Change Actions (WCCA) as part of our compromise with UfM countries. At the last meeting of the UfM Water Expert Group (WEG12), held in Amman in May 23-24, 2022, the UfM member states expressed the need to re-launch the work of the WEG Task Forces, updating their action plans while looking for ways to increase their efficiency and their impact.

Aimed to showcase current UfM actions and initiatives on water and climate change and on water access-sanitation-hygiene, and their relevance for the water sector, the UfM Water Task Forces will continue the discussion started in 2018 on how to ensure the best contribution of these on-going initiatives to the water sector, obtain a reinforced mandate to put greater efforts on water issues of already existing UfM actions and discuss other suggestions for initiatives.

Furthermore, the Task Force discussions will focus on enriching and further adapting the biannual Work Plans of the two priority thematics that will be addressed, WASH and WCCA.

The UfM Water Task Forces will be held as side events of IME’s Regional Symposium “Our Mediterranean: water challenges and regional priorities for 2050”.
