The Co-Presidency and Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean have the pleasure of inviting you to the upcoming UfM Webinar on ‘Fostering the Sustainable Development of Marine Renewable Energy through Effective Licensing and Maritime Spatial Planning’, taking place on July 1st 2024, at 12:00-14:00h CET.

This webinar is organised as a joint effort with the Mediterranean Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature (Med OCEaN).

Kindly find the registration link of the webinar here, and save the date in your calendars.

Marine renewable energy (MRE) is a promising solution for sustainable energy and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It can enhance energy diversification and stimulate economic growth through (i.e.) research, innovation, and job creation. However, its development is currently hindered by complex regulations and spatial constraints. Effective licensing and maritime spatial planning (MSP) are crucial to overcome these challenges.

In the Mediterranean, and particularly in the Southern Med, MRE development has so far been slow due to natural conditions such as lower wind and greater depths, among other factors. Yet, there is significant potential, especially for offshore wind, which could boost energy production to 12 GW by 2030 and 40 GW by 2050 in EU Mediterranean countries.

This webinar will explore the critical aspects of licensing processes and MSP in the context of marine renewable energy projects. It will aim at providing insights into the regulatory frameworks, challenges, and best practices to facilitate the sustainable development of marine renewable energy resources.

The webinar will feature presentations by experts in the field, a panel discussion, as well as an interactive Q&A session. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with speakers, share their experiences, and network with fellow attendees.

Here you can find the detailed programme of the webinar.

Upon your registration, you will receive the online connection link before July 1st.
